Popular Mechanics has an article on the results of a study of airline accidents in the last 36 years and came up with the following: it is safest to sit in back.  Amazingly the survivability rate is almost 70% in the rear compared to 50% up front.  I guess there is some advantage to being in steerage…  For more tips on how to survive a plane crash, read this.

Great stat, but your article link is incorrect.

Contradicts what I read or heard in the past that said the front is the safest since pilots instinctively try to protect themselves when crashing, although in many instances this is likely not possible.

does it matter? you’re much more likely to be assaulted while going through security theater.

On the one hand this seems intuitive since I would think most crashes would be nose down. On the other hand most airplane disaster movies I’ve seen have that part where the back of the plane gets ripped off and some poor guy (usually the annoying guy who harassed the flight attendant) flies out the back still strapped to his seat. Hmm…

crashing means no control over pilots hand.
